Frequently Asked Questions
Plain answers about FELUS bags and FOAM jewellery. If your question isn't here, write to dear@felus.shop.
What are FELUS bags made from?
Every ION is handwoven from natural raffia — the leaf fibre of the raffia palm, harvested by hand in Madagascar, sun-dried, and sorted by length and strength before weaving. The rigid circular handles are wood, wrapped by hand in raffia. The base is genuine leather from Madagascar, added where the bag is woven, and the interior is cotton-lined. In Athens each bag receives its die-cut Φ leather charm — and the Large, its leather drawstrings. Where a bag needs metal, we use as little of it as possible. The full story is on our Materials page.
Where are FELUS bags produced?
A FELUS bag is made twice. In Madagascar it is woven entirely by hand — no loom, no machine — around its wooden, raffia-wrapped handles, and fitted there with its base of genuine Madagascar leather. Each piece then travels to Athens, Greece, where it is finished, inspected, weighed, and given its serial number, and where its Φ leather charm and handmade dust bag are made. The Large also receives its leather drawstrings in Athens. Read more in The Craft.
What are the dimensions of each ION?
| Model | W × H × D (cm) | W × H × D (in) | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| ION Micro | 24 × 19 × 9 | 9.4 × 7.5 × 3.5 | €185 |
| ION Micro Fringe | 24 × 19 × 9 | 9.4 × 7.5 × 3.5 | €195 |
| ION East West | 32 × 21 × 12 | 12.6 × 8.3 × 4.7 | €230 |
| ION East West Fringe | 32 × 21 × 12 | 12.6 × 8.3 × 4.7 | €265 |
| ION Medium | 26 × 27 × 12 | 10.2 × 10.6 × 4.7 | €225 |
| ION Large | 50 × 40 × 17 | 19.7 × 15.7 × 6.7 | €360 |
The fringe models share the frame of their base models — the fringe adds movement, not volume. More in the Size Guide.
What fits inside each size?
The Micro carries an evening: phone, card wallet, keys, lipstick. The East West adds sunglasses and a small wallet. The Medium carries a full day: tablet, wallet, phone, sunglasses, a water bottle. The Large carries a weekend: laptop, towel, book, and everything else.
How do I care for raffia?
Gently, and rarely. Carry with clean, dry hands when you can — oils and lotions can darken the fibres over time. Spot-clean with a soft, dry cloth; for stubborn marks, a barely damp cloth and complete air drying. Never use chemical cleaners, solvents, or a washing machine. Store your ION in its cotton dust bag, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with tissue paper inside to hold its shape. The full ritual is in the Care Guide.
How do I care for the leather?
The leather base, the Φ charm — and on the Large, the drawstrings — are natural leather and need no special care. The leather starts firm and develops its own patina with time; that deepening is intentional, not wear. Keep leather away from prolonged soaking and let it dry naturally if it gets wet.
Are FELUS bags waterproof? Can I take mine to the beach?
Raffia is a natural fibre and is not waterproof. It handles light moisture well and is happy at the beach — sand brushes off with a soft, dry cloth — but avoid prolonged rain or soaking. If your bag gets wet, let it air dry naturally at room temperature; never use a hairdryer or direct heat. FOAM jewellery, on the other hand, is made for the water.
Is each bag numbered? What does the serial number mean?
Yes. Every FELUS piece receives a serial number in Athens before it leaves the workshop, and comes with a numbered edition card. We produce one design at a time, in numbered editions that are never reissued — the number is a record that your bag was made as a singular object, for one person, and was never meant to be one of thousands.
Are any two bags identical?
No. Handweaving and natural fibre mean every bag carries small variations in weave, texture, and tone. These are not defects — they are the signature of the hands that made it.
How long does a FELUS bag take to make?
Days, not hours. A single artisan builds the bag's form stitch by stitch, row by row, entirely by hand. The pace is set by the hand, not by a calendar, and it cannot be rushed or machined.
How are the bags developed?
We make one design at a time. It begins with the weavers in Madagascar, artisans who learned from the generation before them; the second making happens in Athens, where each piece is finished and inspected one by one. We do not follow a fashion calendar — when a collection is ready, it is ready. When it is gone, it is gone.
How much does a FELUS bag cost?
ION bags run from €185 to €360: Micro €185, Micro Fringe €195, Medium €225, East West €230, East West Fringe €265, Large €360. FOAM necklaces are €40–€55. All prices in EUR.
Is FOAM jewellery made by FELUS?
Yes — FOAM is FELUS's jewellery collection, hand-made in Greece by one maker, Melita. Each necklace is tied by hand, one at a time, from agate, natural shell, imitation pearl, and hand-shaped acrylic beads on adjustable cord. It was made for the water — you can wear it in the sea. Rinse with fresh water after swimming and let it dry naturally.
